Doug Welykholowa served 30 years in the Canadian Army as an artillery officer and retired in 2002 to pursue a career as an artist. He is a self-taught artist whose Saskatchewan upbringing has been the major theme in his watercolours. He strives to capture the essence, colour and texture of the landscapes and artefacts of prairie life. While fascinated by watercolours, Doug is continually challenged by the difficulty of painting in this medium, and he embraces the "happy accidents" that result in just the right effect. Doug's watercolours have won numerous awards and his work hangs in both public and private collections across Canada, the United States, Europe and Australia. He won the Calgary Exhibition & Stampede Western Showcase Gallery's Collectors Choice Award in 2005.
